In 1763, a confederation of Indian tribes laid siege to Fort Pitt, a British-held post in western Pennsylvania. A leader of the Delaware Indians, Turtle's Heart, visited the fort for a meeting with the British. He said a vast Indian army had already overwhelmed the countryside, but the Delawares could offer the British protection if they would abandon the fort.
The British refused, but thanked the Indians profusely for their concern. Then, "out of our regard to them, we gave them two blankets and a handkerchief out of the Smallpox Hospital. I hope it will have the desired effect," wrote a British trader in his diary.
Before long, a smallpox epidemic struck hard among the Indians surrounding Fort Pitt, killing many of them.

不 久 ， 圍 攻 庇 特 堡 的 印 第 安 人 之 間 爆 發 嚴 重 天 花 疫 症 ， 死 者 甚 眾 。
〔 附 注 〕 德 拉 威 州 （ Delaware ） 是 今 日 美 國 最 小 的 一 州 ， 其 名 來 自 維 吉 尼 亞 （ Virginia ） 第 一 任 總 督 De La Warr 。 |
