Personally, watching western movies is a way we can hear how native English speakers speak.
So I think it helps for sure.
However, there's one thing you must do, that is trying to speak like them, or it will be too late when you find that you are not speaking as naturally as you wish.
For written tests/exams, movie watching won't help much.
But for spoken English, it obviously helps ...

English can definitely be improved if people watch movies. When you familiar with English, both reading and writing skills, and surely listening skill can be advanced.
I think watching movies with English subtitle/without subtitle can help. However, most of the movies we watch in the cinema often provide Chinese subtitle/.\
