[Sichuan] Earthquake One Year Report
[On] 12 May 2008, a massive earthquake measuring 8.0 on the [Richter] scale struck
Sichuan Province's Wenchuan County. The Wenchuan earthquake [left] 88,000
people dead or missing and near 400,000 [injured].
Immediately after the earthquake, the Hong Kong Committee for[ UNICEF] called
for action to [help] the victims in Sichuan. More than HK$140 million has been
[raised] for emergency relief from Hong Kong alone. In addition to the funds
received from China, other national [committees] and offices, UNICEF has raised
more than HK$280 million in total. UNICEF is working of the Government of
China and non-government organizations on various recovery projects [including]
health and nutrition, water and sanitation, [education] and child protection.
